As an advocate for children of abuse and trauma, I have several ongoing initiatives to support better healing options for these children.
Speaking:
I share my message of hope and redemption with civic organizations, boards, church organizations, and school groups. I have been a keynote speaker for fundraising banquets and other events. At each event it is common for a child or most often an adult to thank me for being their voice. It is my privilege to do so. If you think I would be a good fit to speak to your organization, please contact me here!
Legislative and Collaboration:
I am currently working on “Evie’s Law” with legislators in the state of Alabama to strengthen language in a law which allows children to give their courtroom testimony via video. Children are often frightened and intimidated to face their abuser in open court, and their testimony can be greatly hindered. Allowing them to testify and answer questions from the defense and prosecutors via video can lessen the stress and fear of these already-traumatized children.
Child Advocacy Centers, who provide counselling and other services at no charge to children of abuse and their families, receive approximately 33% of their funding from government sources; they must make up the remainder of their operating funds through fundraising. I am asking and encouraging legislators to increase funding for these vital organizations to make a positive impact on the healing and improve the mental health of these children. Media:
I have shared my message concerning my work for abused children several times for live and recorded television news spots. In addition, I have had several magazine, newspaper, and online articles written about my efforts. As well, I have a very active social media presence posting content relating to many facets of child abuse support, prevention, and education. Examples of some of these stories can be found here.
